According to the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Cancer Facts & Figures, one out of every eight women is at risk of getting breast cancer in her lifetime. However, many of these women will survive breast cancer. In Arkansas, it is estimated that 1,770 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer and 430 will die of the disease in 2010. A woman’s best chances for survival are early detection through regular screening mammograms and clinical breast exams.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is committed to the fight against breast cancer. Since the first Race for the Cure in Arkansas in 1996, Northeast Arkansas Communities have received nearly 2 million dollars in grants for education, screening and treatment for those who would otherwise not have access to services.
Mayor Harold Perrin is the first to proclaim October 1 as GO PINK FOR THE CURE DAY, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has also proclaimed October 1 as GO PINK FOR THE CURE DAY. Additionally Mayor Perrin challenges other mayors to proclaim GO PINK FOR THE CURE to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure in bringing breast health services to Arkansas communities.
