Commissioner: Future highway funding may be up to voters |

If Arkansans want more money spent on highways, it will be up to them to come up with the funds.
Funding for the Arkansas Highways and Transportation Department has been relatively flat since 1976 while funding for other state agencies skyrocketed. Dick Trammell, Baxter County's representative to the Arkansas Highway Commission, says changing that likely will require a public referendum decided by voters because in the present and foreseeable economic climate lawmakers have little inclination to raise taxes for any cause.
