2012 Farm Bill Hearings Begin

Arkansas Farm Bureau Capitol Steps reported USDA “Secretary Vilsack told the House Agriculture Committee that the Obama administration will leave writing of the bill largely to congressional agriculture committees, but the Administration believes the bill should contain a safety net for farmers plus provisions to help create better off-farm jobs in rural America. Vilsack said the Administration would provide an outline of a bill, but has no intention of providing a complete farm bill.”

According to the Farm Bureau, “Subcommittee hearings on the farm bill will continue in Washington, D.C., throughout the summer.” Field hearings will be held April 30-May 4 in Iowa, Idaho, California and Wyoming and May 14-18 in Georgia, Alabama, Texas and South Dakota. The first dairy field hearing was held in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 20, with another dairy hearing tentatively scheduled for North Carolina in June.
