1st District Congressional forum debate draws big crowd

"This is a political year like no other I've seen in quite some time," said one attendee.

Several of the Congressional candidates vying for the First District's seat met face to face Monday night.

"We need to know who the next person really is and get a pretty good idea about who they are because it's a very important responsibility," said Beasley.

JONESBORO — It was show time Monday afternoon for six of the eight candidates hoping to become the next 1st District congressman to put their best feet — and faces — forward to a Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce audience.

The open seat came about when seventh-term Rep. Marion Berry, a Democrat, decided to forego a re-election bid, announcing his retirement earlier this year. He was first elected in November 1996. All the candidates are looking ahead to the May 18 party preferential primary election.

Four of the six Democrats seeking their party’s nomination to succeed Berry were on hand — former Berry Chief of Staff Chad Causey of Jonesboro, former state Rep. Tim Wooldridge of Paragould, state Rep. David Cook of Williford and Mountain Home businessman Terry Green — while the other two, state Sen. Steve Bryles of Blythe-ville and Ben Ponder of Mountain Home, were unable to take part.

Both Republicans battling for that party’s nominee slot — Jonesboro agricultural broadcaster and businessman Rick Crawford and former congressional aide Princella Smith of Wynne — participated.
